BGR Time!
Ever had an intense and inexplicable desire to discover what a massive (like literally 6,000 people) summer camp for 18-year-olds would look like? Probably not, but here we go anyway ;)
So, BGR (Boiler Gold Rush) is Purdue's version of like 0-week, orientation week, welcome week, or whatever you want to call it. Basically, any freshman that want to move onto campus a week before class starts in order to learn a little bit about what Purdue is. This includes class preview sessions, campus tours, meals in each of the 5 dining courts, games, speakers, info sessions and fairs, etc., etc. Basically, its a week-long summer camp for 7000 18-year-olds, and a ton of fun.
I was randomly assigned to a group of 15 other freshmen and one upperclassman team leader (or TL in Purdue speak) with whom I hung out with for the whole week. We also had a "buddy group" of international students that we hung out with too. The first day was pretty awkward because like, it was a randomly assigned group and everyone was confused and I had not eaten lunch, but we made it past that, and got pretty close by the end of the week. My group was super cool and it was really fun to get to know all of them throughout the week.
It was a really fun and jam-packed week, so here are the top 10 things I learned:
1. people are nice and cool and being a hermit is over-rated
2. college is so far, so good, and yes you can get bored of Cards Against Humanity
3. Purdue is a super cool place and complex shit runs like clockwork
4. being able to do one's own thing is fun and very awesome (until you throw school in and then its kind of overwhelming but still awesome [see following post])
5. cute guys are a thing I had forgotten existed
6. things get really crowded when 7,000 people are all trying to do the same thing at the same time, which I'm not big into. Why did I decide to come to a big state school again? Oh well. too late now. itllbefine
7. a) engineering is hard
b) people struggle in engineering.
8. people make it out alive, and with a degree, most of the time even though 7 (a) and (b) are true
9. that whole Andy Gross thing was awful and made me more wary of going into a male-dominated profession, but most guys are very nice and cool, and
10. BGR was still wicked fun. :)
Hit me up for more stories and I'll try to respond next weekend because weekdays are crazy
Here are some pics :) enjoy!
